Each angel bearing a symbol of one of the seven sacraments. Angels are known as "messengers of God" and are believed to be heavenly spirits. Angels were chosen for two reasons: (1) they are understood to be servants of God’s majesty and (2) we believe that the earthly liturgy is intimately connected with the liturgy that is constant in heaven. Many times in the Church’s rituals the hymns of the angels are used, especially in the Mass with the Gloria and the Sanctus. The symbols chosen for each of the sacraments are traditional to Christian art and iconography.
